Meet the 2018 Sailing School Team

Chris Beard, Program Director

Chris grew up sailing at Bar Harbor Yacht Club and has many years of experience as a sailing instructor and sailing program administrator. He is a faculty member at Sturgis Public Charter School, where he teaches high school history and leads the sailing program as Head Coach. The Stage Harbor Sailing School is looking forward to him bringing his expertise to our program this summer.


Claire Hooper, Program Assistant

Claire is a year-round resident of Chatham. After living in New York City for many years, she returned to Chatham 8 years ago to raise her two daughters, Grace and Laura.  While in New York, Claire worked as an office manager for American Express Travel, a speech writer for the Association of Junior Leagues and a 3rd grade teacher at The Chapin School. She also has multiple years of experience as a fund raiser and event planner. Claire has worked for the Monomoy Regional School District as an accounting clerk, substitute teacher (Pre-K through Grade 12) and substitute administrative assistant. She currently is an administrative assistant in the Main Office of Monomoy Regional High School. Time off during the summer months makes it possible to continue doing what she loves best about her job at Monomoy--keeping things organized and on task for the rest of the team and being able to be of service to students and their families. 


Kelsey Shakin:  Head Instructor/Race Team Coordinator/420 Coach
(Boston, MA)

Kelsey returns to SHYC for her seventh summer on staff. She has just completed her junior year at Roger Williams University, studying Marine Biology and Public Health. She has recently come back from studying abroad at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences in Bermuda. At RWU, Kelsey is a member of one of the top nationally ranked sailing teams in the country, as the A Women's skipper. Kelsey is very excited for the upcoming season at SHYC


Riley Eger: 420 Coach
(Grosse Pt Farms, MI)

Graduated from Roger Williams University in May 2017. He was a four year member of the RWU NCAA Division 1 Sailing program as well as senior captain. He has attended 3 college national championships for both fleet racing and team racing. Represented the hawks at the United States Team Race national championship in Annapolis. Also Served as a College Ambassador at the RedBull Foiling Generation! He now runs a series of e-commerce building materials websites and plans to move to Boston following the summer sailing season.

Cortie Gensler: Assistant 420 Coach
Winchester, MA)

Cortie returns for his sixth summer working at the SHYC! He is a rising junior at Cornell University studying City and Regional Planning and is pursuing minors in Business and Real Estate. He cannot wait to get back on the Nantucket Sound working with awesome kids.




Will Batchelder: Co-Opti Race Coach/Senior Instructor
(Boston, MA)

Will is delighted to return for his sixth summer on the staff at SHYC as the Opti Co-Head Coach. Will has just finished up his Freshman year at the University of North Carolina where he is studying Business Administration with a minor in Spanish. Other than sailing, Will enjoys playing the drums and skiing. Will is excited for this summer, and can't wait to get back out on the water of Stage Harbor!

Theo Bartlett: Co-Opti Race Coach/Senior Instructor 
(Rye, NY)

Theo is returning for his 5th summer working at SHYC. He is a rising sophomore at Tufts University, where he is currently studying Economics and Finance and sailing for the varsity sailing team. He started sailing at SHYC when he was 7 years old, and he has sailed competitively in Optis and 420s for SHYC as well. Theo enjoys running, kitesurfing, and going to the beach in his free time.


George Lewis: Senior Instructor 
(Tampa, FL)

George is studying Accounting at Southern Methodist University where he will be a junior in the fall. He has been sailing at Stage Harbor Yacht Club since he was 6 and could not be more excited for another summer.  



Allison Krauss: Senior Instructor
(Belmont, MA)

Allison will be a junior at Fairfield University in the fall where she competes on the sailing team. This summer will be her twelfth year sailing. Allison loves going to the beach and spending time in Chatham and cannot wait to start her fifth year as an instructor this summer.





Lawson Lewis: Senior Instructor
(Tampa, FL)

Lawson Lewis is currently a Sophmore at Southern Methodist University, where he is studying political science and history. Oringinally from Tampa, Florida, he now spends his off season studying in Dallas,Texas. This will be Lawson’s seventh year working for the club.





Jake Cummings: Senior Instructor
(Providence, RI)

Jake Cummings is currently a freshman at Miami University in Ohio where he is studying finance and math. Jake is from Providence, Rhode Island and is excited to work at the club for his sixth year.





Dawson Ritchie: Senior Instructor
(Southborough, MA)

I'm going into my Sophomore year at George Washington University. I'm a midfielder on the lacrosse team at George Washington. I enjoy sports, fishing, and sailing. I'm looking forward to my 5th year as an instructor and great summer of sailing!



Cailin Gensler: Senior Instructor
(Winchester, MA)

 Cailin is returning for her fifth summer working at SHYC and cannot wait to get back on the water. She is a graduate of St. George's School in Newport, RI and a rising sophomore at Hobart and William Smith Colleges; she is a member of the highly competitive HWS Sailing team. Cailin loves the memories she has from the sailing school when she was a little girl; she hopes that she can help create lasting memories just like her instructors did for her.




Kerry Sullivan:  Senior Instructor
(Houston, TX)

“Acting” Instructor: Kerry hails from Houston and has been sailing since age 8 at SHYC. Like many of today’s students, she began in Sprites and progressed through Optis and 420s. She just finished her Freshman year at Muhlenberg College, in Allentown, PA, where she is majoring in Theatre and Dance. Kerry will be joining the SHYC staff for the August session, after finishing a run of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying at Muhlenberg in July. “See you in August!”


Olivia Gonzalez: Senior Instructor
(Islamorada, FL)

Olivia has recently finished her first year at the College of Charleston and will be a sophomore at the college in the fall. Sailing is her strongest sport and her passion. She learned to sail when she was six years old at SHYC and continued year-round back home in Florida. Her favorite memories are spending her summers in Chatham and growing up sailing for SHYC. Olivia hopes to pass on her love of sailing and fun on the water this year as a Senior Instructor.



Jack Shakin: Senior Instructor/STEM Coordinator
(Boston, MA)

Jack just finished his Freshman year at Boston College at Tabor Academy. He has been sailing since he was in Hermit Crabs at the age of 6. He has sailed in Sprites, as well as competitively in Optis and 420s. This will be his 5th summer as an instructor at SHYC.

Zoe Carlson: Instructor/STEM Coordinator
(Boston, MA)

Zoe will be a freshman this fall at Claremont McKenna College, where she plans to major in Science Management with a focus in Biotechnology. This past June, she graduated from Beaver Country Day School in Chestnut Hill, MA. This will be her twelfth year sailing and fourth year working at SHYC. She is excited to be on the water, teaching kids, and continuing to implement the updated the STEM program. When she's not sailing or teaching, Zoe enjoys playing volleyball and stand-up paddleboarding.


Emma Leary:  Instructor/STEM Coordinator
(Bethesda, MD)

Emma attends Georgetown Day School in Washington, DC and she will be a senior in the fall. She has been sailing at SHYC since she was 8 years old and loves her time in Chatham. Emma actively plays varsity lacrosse and soccer and can't wait to return for another year of sailing!





Jack Evans:  Instructor
(Charlestown, MA)

Jack Evans just finished his senior year of High School at Boston Latin School. He played soccer and lacrosse throughout high school and skis in the winter. He will be attending Elon University in the fall.






Hammond Hearle:  Instructor
(Boston, MA)

Hammond is looking forward to her third summer at SHYC. She just graduated from The Winsor School in Boston, MA and will be attending The College of William & Mary in the fall. Besides sailing, Hammond enjoys playing soccer and lacrosse for her school. She is excited for another fun summer in Chatham!



Morgan Krauss:  Instructor
(Belmont, MA)

Morgan will be a junior at Belmont High School this fall. She has been sailing at SHYC for eleven years and this will be her second year as an Instructor. Morgan really enjoys playing soccer, skiing and most of all sailing.




Catherine Shakin:  Instructor
(Boston, MA)

Cat will be entering her third year as an instructor at SHYC, and her ninth year as an active member of the club. After another season of racing with the Tabor Academy varsity sailing team, she is both ready and excited to begin the summer of 2018!




Alex Gonzalez: Junior Instructor (Islamorada, FL)

Henry is excited to return for his second summer working at SHYC. He is currently a rising junior at Phillips Academy Andover where he plays soccer, squash, and rows. Henry is looking forward to another amazing summer at Stage Harbor!



Hayden Earl: Instructor in Training (Boston, MA)

Hayden is returning to SHYC for his second summer on staff and is currently a freshman at St. Georges Prep School. He sails on the SG team and is a current member of the Olympic Development Program. When not sailing, Hayden likes to spend his time surfing, golfing, and hanging out with friends.






Will Lucy: Instructor in Training

Will Lucy is starting his first year working at SHYC after many years of being a student there. He grew up in Chester, NJ where he liked to hang out with friends and play sports. Currently, he attends St. Mark’s School in Southborough, MA and will be a sophomore in the 2018-2019 year.


 Ryan Smith: Volunteer


Drew Donahue: Volunteer

Drew just completed his first year at Wellesley High School in Massachusettes and will be returning as a sophomore after this summer. This will be Drewś seventh year sailing at Stage Harbor, but his first year as a volunteer. He enjoys running cross country and track, and has also joined the Wellesley High School sailing team, where he will competitively team race 420's across Massachusetts as well as in other states. He is looking forward to his first year on the advanced 420 race team and a great first year of volunteering.




Shep Hearle: Volunteer

Shep is excited to start his first year working at Stage Harbor as a volunteer. He will be attending Philips Academy Andover next year as a new freshmen. Along with sailing, Shep like's to play football, squash, and golf. He is looking forward to another fun summer!









Matthew Lacey: Senior Steward
(Lexington, MA)

Matt is returning for his 8th summer at the club. He is a junior Communication student at Curry College. He looks forward to working with everyone this summer.






Andrew Kettle: Steward
(Weston, MA)

Andrew recently finished his freshman year at Boston College, where he is studying history and political science. This is his fifth year working at SHYC and he is looking forward to another great summer in Chatham.
