August Speaker Series:
A huge thank you to Cape Cod Commerical Fishermen's Alliance for an informative evening discussing
Protecting Baitfish and Inshore Waters with a No Fish Zone

The Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen's Alliance believes a no fish zone off the backside of Cape Cod would prohibit industrial herring trawlers from fishing in nearshore waters which would protect Cape Cod fish populations and allow our small-boat fishing industry to thrive.

Sea herring are an important source of food for whales, birds and larger fish such as Bluefin tuna. An industrial trawl fleet targets these herring and often fishes very close to shore. These vessels wipe out herring and other baitfish from inshore waters. The Fishermen’s Alliance has partnered with birders, whale watchers and recreational fishermen to advocate for more sensible management of the herring trawl fleet, such as documenting more fully what they catch and making inshore waters off limits. This will help restore Cape Cod’s ocean ecosystem, improving marine life and rebuilding inshore fisheries to support the local economy. Cape Cod fishermen have a shared interest in abundant fish populations. That's the starting point for our pioneering work on locally-based approaches to managing what fishermen catch.

From LUNCH@SHYC: If your sailor missed the hands-on opportunity with the town in the shellfish flats during Session 1, here’s their last chance!

Hermits and Seamen can join us on Monday during Lunch Bunch. Older kids- Tuesday. Email Sonjabartlett@icloud.com.

Sailing School Reminders

Session 2 is off to a great start. We are so happy to welcome new students to the program and welcome back our returning sailors. If you want to add on weeks or additional sailing classes, please do so through this form

- Proper Sailing Clothing: Closed toed shoes every day, life jacket, layers (non-cotton), Spray Top. Visit our FAQs for more information
- Check the weather every morning. We have had a lot of rain and fog this summer, always bring some extra clothes and a towel to be ready.
- Please Arrive on time 9:15 in the morning and 1:15 in the afternoon.
- Sturgis Boat Works in South Yarmouth and West Marine in Hyannis have great sailing gear and layers for the kids.

https://www.westmarine.com/

Finally, one last reminder about sailing students and any head bumps during lessons. In addition it is very important that students let our instructors know if they get bumped in the head during a lesson. All of our instructors have concussion training as part of first aid and CPR certification. In any case where a student receives a head bump during a lesson we check for concussion symptoms. If needed we bring the student off the water and call home. If any concussion symptoms persist and occur at home you should contact your family physician.

Notes From Program Director Chris Beard:
It is hard to believe we already are three weeks into our summer season at Stage Harbor Sailing School. I wanted to provide members, students and parents some general info about our season so far.

This year we have expanded our Wednesday shore school offering by incorporating a STEM class. STEM or (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) provides our Stage Harbor students with additional content beyond our performance and advancement qualifications component. This summer 4 of our Instructors completed US Sailing's STEM course and have been putting some great lessons together for our kids. So far this summer STEM has covered a variety of topics including weather patterns, boat making, and environmental awareness. Our instructors feel this class allows students to bolster their sailing knowledge as well as develop great relationships with other students and instructors. From the perspective of the Program Director I think STEM also places an emphasis on lessons and planning which is another area of our program we are focusing on this year.

As the summer progresses, I want to encourage parents to continue reaching out to me with feedback, questions or student-related concerns. We are always trying to improve our program! Feedback from parents helps us shape our program, and new classes, such as BICs and Adventure Sail, came about with the help of parent feedback.

Finally, I would also like to add a few requests. I am trying to improve instruction and so would request dropping off students a little earlier so that our classes can start on time at both 9:30 and 1:30. Don't forget to send kids with closed toed shoes, layers for cold days and sunscreen, even on foggy days!

This Week's Activities: Chatham Shellfish Excursions!

Attention Sailing School Students! Here is a hands-on experience you don’t want to miss. Part II of our ongoing experiential learning opportunity with Town Shellfish Department Scientists is THIS coming Monday (for Hermits and Seamen) and Tuesday (for Mates, Old Mates and Skippers) during Lunch@SHYC. We will motor over to the Causeway Inner Harbor Shellfish flats to help the Town Shellfish team pull up young quahogs out of their incubation. It’s a lot of fun and we get a chance to really help the shellfish folks do their work. Just pack a lunch and drink. Pick up is 1:15 at the Sailing School Center. Accounts will automatically be charged $5. (And just as a reminder no lunches that have any peanut items- thank you!) Any questions? Email sonjabartlett@icloud.com
