Requirements for the advancement to Old Mates


Knots:

Clove hitch, belay a cleat, secure a coil two ways 

Terminology:

Starboard and port tack, head up and head off, beating, reaching, running, trim, luffing, cat's paw, sculling, in irons, launching, landing, swamp

Parts of the boat:

Hull:                  Planking, ribs, deck, stem, forward transom, dagger board, fiberglass, mast thwart, bulkhead, air bag

Spars:              Gaff, sprit, mizzen, mast step, mast hole, gooseneck, mast collar, boom jaw

Sails:                 Leach, bolt rope, sail tie, grommets, headboard, throat, peak, class insignia, spinnaker

Rigging:            Boom downhaul/vang, mainsheet bridle, masthead fly

Fittings:            Shackle, turnbuckle, chainplate, block, pintals, gudgeons and chock

Rigs:                  Square, lateen, marconi, gaff

Knowledge:                Simple right of way rules (S.L.O.), channel marks and how to leave them, furling sails properly, basic safety rules, and personal conduct (do's and
   don'ts in boats), use of dolly, proper skipper posture and positioning, explain how to get out to irons

Sailing Performance:

Benchmark: Confidently sail a Sprite in moderate to heavy wind without an instructor and perform the following:

Sail a Sprite with crew to windward completing at least three tacks

Properly round a mark, and return to starting point completing at least two controlled jibes, wing the jib, make a proper landing at dock.

Demonstrate getting out of irons.

Retrieve a person overboard.

Row a skiff around a mark and make a proper landing at the dock.

Boat Etiquette:

                                    Conduct at a protest meeting, boat safety

Instructor Discretion:

                                    Before advancing a student to Old Mates the instructor the Head Instructor should feel confident that this student is able to skipper a
                                    Sprite without an instructor to all parts of the harbor in moderate or heavy winds. Mates should be familiar with basic racing rules and tactics.
