Racing Fleets

SHYC maintains an active racing calendar for the following classes of boats. Click on each class name for more information.

Sprites

Remember the Sprite? For many of us it was our first introduction to sailing, and SHYC's youngest racers can be found in these tried-and-true dinghies every week.

Optimists

The world's leading single-handed junior racing boat, this boat suits racers up to 15 years of age. SHYC's large Optimist fleet is broken down by age and experience so that everyone from the complete novice to the budding Olympian can enjoy competition.

420s

A two-person sloop with spinnaker, the 420 is commonly raced at the high school and collegiate level, and provides a high level of competition for SHYC's more experienced sailors.

Lasers

The most popular single-handed racing boat in the world, this Olympic class attracts strong, athletic sailors. SHYC's fleet includes juniors and adults racing together; an active local regatta scene adds variety and provides ample opportunites to race in larger fleets.

Day Sailers

Either in their own boats or in the Club's fleet of four well-maintained boats, adult SHYC members race actively in this class. The Club hosted the 2009 Day Sailer North American Championships, and hosted two local regattas in 2010.

Cruising

SHYC hosts an annual "Bluewater" cruising race and other events for owners of cruising boats.
