Happy Holidays from Stage Harbor Yacht Club

Since our Closing Meeting in August, we have been busy preparing for our 2017 season.  Please take a minute to read the many highlights below.  This work would not be possible without the volunteer effort of 17 SHYC board members.  The time and energy devoted by these board members helps to make our club a special place and I am grateful for their assistance.

As we approach 2017, we will continue to keep our eye on the rich history at SHYC, all the while considering incremental change to ensure that the Club meets the needs of its members. As you begin to make your own plans for the summer of 2017, we hope the "important" dates below will help with your planning.  A fully detailed calendar will be available in the early spring.  For folks that missed the Closing Meeting, I have also included the Summer 2016 awards listing below.   For now, please enjoy your holidays and the New Year ahead!

Vice Commodore's Report

On the social front, the summer of 2017 promises to be spectacular.  The summer kicks off on June 25 with a new time and format for the Opening Meeting. The meeting will commence at 0930 hrs at SHYC and following the meeting, all members are welcome to sail or motor to the outer beach for a cookout. Later that afternoon the yacht club and sailing school boards along with Membership Chair, Johanna Cahoon will host a gathering for the club's newest members. Thanks in advance to Sara Wilson and Emanuele Angelino for hosting the All Member Cocktail Party and auction on July 1 and to Laurel Driscoll and Pam Cummings for once again for chairing this wonderful event. All sailing school students are welcome to participate in float decoration activities on July 3rd, ahead of the 4th of July Parade. The midsummer cookout returns on July 22. Event chairs, Jessica King and Susan Gotschewski, will have tables, chairs and a big tent set up on Chief's Pier for a spectacular clam bake. Sunny skies, a hot grill, and cool beverages await members, young and old, at the Luau on July 29th.  Join in the fun and games led by master of ceremonies, John Forger at this spectacular beach party.

All members are welcome to two Family Fridays events on July 14 and August 18. The concept for this NEW event is simple: Stage Harbor Yacht Club is a vibrant and active place during the week, but the club then goes fairly dormant over the weekend. Family Fridays would offer an opportunity for students, their parents and other club members to socialize on the property at an incredibly beautiful time of the day. Two Family Friday events are being planned at approximately 1700 hrs., during which time, students will have an opportunity to show their parents what they have learned at sailing school for the past few weeks in the areas of knot tying, terminology, parts and knowledge of the boat, rigging and de-rigging. Students can also go for fun sails in the vicinity of the club with their parents. The Speaker Series will return in 2017 with some captivating guest lecturers.

More information regarding Family Fridays, the Speaker Series and other exciting social events will be coming your way in the coming months!

Happy New Year!

Rear Commodore's Report

SHYC is hard at work preparing for the 2017 sailing season.  As Rear Commodore, I have been actively recruiting volunteers for next year's fleet captains for our Opti, 420 and BIC fleets. The first regatta of the season will be our very own 23rd Annual SHYC Opti Regatta on July 6th.  SHYC will be hosting the SMSA Gill Trophy again this year on July 24-26. The rest of the sanctioned regattas will be available on the Club's web site and in the directory calendar.

Boat maintenance continues to be a priority during the off-season for both our motor boats and sailboats.  The Day Sailers and 420s have gotten a lot of attention this winter. The Club will be purchasing 3 new 420s and selling 3 of our older 420s in order to keep the fleet in good sailing shape. All boats will be ready and in excellent condition for the start of Sailing School on June 26, 2017.

Happy New Year

Sailing School President's Report

The Sailing School has already begun work planning for summer 2017, with the hiring of a new Program Director and the work of the Program Committee.

Jane Frye, who served as the Sailing School's Program Director for the past two summers, decided to move to Denver where she is now working year round.  The Club conducted a broad search for a new Program Director and is pleased to announce that we have hired Chris Beard.  Chris is a teacher at the Sturgis Charter Public School in Hyannis where he serves as the Sailing Coach.  He has also served as the Program Administrator at the Bass River Yacht Club for the past three years.  Chris grew up sailing in Bar Harbor. We look forward to welcoming Chris to the Sailing School.

The Program Committee, a committee of the board comprised of Susanna Beckwith, Audrey Fenton, David Leary and Sara Wilson, has been examining the Sailing School's offerings to ensure that it meets the needs of its students. Look for more details about class offerings, Stay the Day, parent communication and more in the 2017 Sailing School registration materials.

Happy New Year

Technology Committee Update

The Technology committee is in the process of transitioning to Memberclicks' updated website and electronic communication system. Upgrades will include a more robust, mobile and tablet-friendly website, enhanced e-billing options, and a forthcoming easy to use SHYC app that gives members access to the calendar, member directory and announcement notifications on any smartphone or tablet (iOS and Android). Every adult member will be able to access all website and invoicing features. Any parent will now be able to register his or her children for sailing school and activities. There is no additional action needed on your part; most usernames and passwords will remain the same. A few members will be contacted about needing to change login credentials.  All features of SHYC.com will remain active through this transition and upgrades will be complete in early January. The App will be available for free in the iTunes and Android stores and access to it will be provided through an automatic email verification system. All bills may be paid by credit card online or by mailed check. Please contact [email protected] for any technology questions or assistance. The beloved print directory will be in everyone's mailboxes in the Spring!
