Sailing School President's Report

The count down to the Sailing School’s first session has begun.  Summer will be here before we know it!  Be on the lookout for an email announcing the opening of Sailing School registration.  We are excited to announce here a few changes for summer 2018:

  • Chris Beard will return to lead our program.
  • Monday afternoon’s adventure sail option is now open to Mates and Old Mates.  We encourage this class for students also enrolled in our afternoon opti racing program as a nice way to take a break and spend time with friends.
  • The 420 racing program will have two distinct tracks: (a) a junior program that combines racing instruction and adventure sail using 420s and other appropriate boats; (b) an advanced racing program for those sailors looking to focus on developing outstanding racing skills.
  • The 420 racing program and Opti for Old Mates/Skippers program will offer team “swag” to emphasize the team nature of these programs.  Look for details in the registration process.
  • The 420 racing program will be co-coached by Kelsey Shakin and Riley Eger.  These outstanding coaches will bring the best of instruction and a fun experience.
  • Revised STEM program with an arts component.
  • A new Adult Instruction class will be available (in addition to the existing adult fun sails) for those adults who are new to sailing and want to learn the basics.

Commodore's Report

All calm in Stage Harbor as we gear up and look ahead to another fantastic season in Stage Harbor.  Floats are being repaired and attention to the fleet will begin shortly. Sailing School registration will open this week, so keep your eyes open for a letter in your inbox from our Sailing School President David Leary. This will be a great opportunity to plan your summer schedule around our 2018 curriculum while taking advantage of an early season discount.  Thank you to everyone who has signed up to volunteer on committees and events. Volunteering is a great way to meet fellow members and to be a part of our increased activities available this summer. We offer a lot in a short season and any help we can get is very much appreciated.  Enjoy the rest of our late winter and join us in looking forward to an early spring and fantastic summer!

Vice Commodore's Report

Ladies and Gentlemen - Let’s get ready to socialize!  The summer of 2018 has some amazing social events in store for kids and adults alike. The summer kicks off with an informal picnic planned at Harding’s Beach following Opening meeting on June 24.  Later that evening the Board will host a gathering for our new member families and their Proposers. It’s not too late to propose new members - if you have a friend, neighbor or relative who would like to join the Club, be sure to reach out to Membership Chair, Johanna Cahoon  to get the process started. On July 3, the annual Float Decorating party takes place at the club, with the parade to follow on the 4th.  “Hooked on Chatham” is the theme this summer and our float is sure to be a catch!  Save the date for July 14, as our All Member Cocktail Party Chairs, Robin Martin and Maryann Smith, along with hosts, Sara Wilson and Emanuele Angelino, are planning a spectacular evening of fun!  Look for details in future mailings, but do plan to attend an amazing All Member Cocktail party overlooking Oyster River and Nantucket Sound.

On Wednesday, July 11, a new event, Women’s Night, is sure to be a hit.  Fun Friday’s multiply from two events last summer to three for 2018.  Come to the Sailing Center and new rooftop deck to socialize with friends - new and old alike - on July 13, August 3, and August 17. Hats off to Fun Friday Chairs, Inga Walker, Victoria Quake and Lisa Lucy for all their help to put these gatherings together. Our Speaker Series will become part of Fun Fridays and will focus on the history and future of our SHE (Stage Harbor Enterprise) fish pier.  Look for more details to come this spring.  “It’s Clam Time in Chatham!” Jessica King and Susan Gotschewski will work their magic again this summer as they pull together the mid-summer Clam Bake on Chief’s Pier on July 21.  Junior Members will gather for a shindig on July 27, and the Luau returns on Saturday, July 28, for its 55th year on Cressent Beach!  Seniors will gather at the Club on August 1st for their annual luncheon.  All members are welcome to kick up their heels at the Commodore’s Ball on August 11. And last, but not least, the summer of 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the Ladies Luncheon.  In recognition of this milestone, we have planned a special end-of-summer Ladies Luncheon celebration.

Be sure to sign up to volunteer to get involve on one or more committees this summer.  It just isn’t as much fun without you!!!

See you in Chatham soon!

Rear Commodore's Report

The 2018 sailing season is fast approaching and SHYC has been hard at work preparing our fleet, coaches and all of the Opti and 420 regatta schedules. The 2018 regatta schedule is almost complete for both fleet and team racing.  SHYC is looking forward to the first regatta of the season which will be our very own 24th Annual Opti Regatta scheduled for July 6. It’s always great to start the summer with home water advantage! To view the Sothern Mass Sailing Association  (SMSA) calendar please click here

The Sailing School is very excited to be offering both the Opti and 420 race teams tech shirts, which will have the burgee on the front and either Opti or 420 race team down the sleeve. For each sailor who registers by June 1, a free tech shirt will be provided.  Each racer will be able to purchase additional shirts at a cost of $23. The Advanced 420 racers will have the opportunity to purchase Helly Hanson crew jackets at a group rate of $114.50. These jackets must also be ordered by June 1. All the swag links will be provided on the Sailing School registration forms. Please contact Regina Shakin with any questions regarding race team swag.

There will be a Parent Coffee at the Shakin’s House on June 28 at 9:30, which will cover important information regarding Sailing School and Race Teams. It’s always nice to have coffee during the first week of sailing. We get a chance to catch up on everyone’s “off season” and it gives parents a chance to hear about all things SHSS. It’s also a perfect time for parents to ask any questions they may have about Sailing School, private lessons and being part of a race team.  Stay tuned for an official invitation for this event.
